MB: Cash for Car Thieves

Author: Colin Craig 2011/03/17

CTV recently did a great investigative story on how car thieves have been getting "compensation" courtesy of Manitoba taxpayers.

Yes, when injurred in car accidents, car thieve have not only received "free" health care courtesy of law abiding taxpayers, it looks like they're also receiving "compensation" for their crimes.

Talk about a joke!

According to the CTV story, one car thieve noted he received a lump sum payment between $30,000 and $60,000 after smashing up a stolen car. Incredibly, even the thief admitted he didn't deserve the money.

Further, the CTV story also noted how taxpayers have been picking up the tab for car thieves' families to be flown in to be by their side in the hospital. And on the off chance the thief dies in the accident...yup, taxpayers have been paying for compensation to the families for that too.

Incredibly, even though the NDP voted against a bill that would have addressed the problem back in 2008, the NDP now says they're going to fix the problem.

To help educate Manitobans about the matter, and to encourage them to take action, the CTF developed this YouTube clip.

Please give it a watch, forward it to your friends and contact the Minister Andrew Swan on this issue - 204-945-3728 or [email protected].
